SkillReg vs Skillkit: Local Skills Manager vs Hosted Skill Registry

Facts about third-party tools were checked on October 16, 2026. Each one links to a numbered, dated source at the bottom of the page. Anything we could not check is marked "not verified".

Skillkit and SkillReg both help teams use agent skills across several coding agents, so they are often compared. They sit at different layers: Skillkit is a command-line toolbox that runs on your machine, and SkillReg is a hosted registry where an organization publishes and governs its skills. This page compares them and shows how they can work together.

What Skillkit is

Skillkit is an open-source command-line tool published on npm as skillkit, from the rohitg00/skillkit repository, under the Apache-2.0 license [1]. Version 1.24.0 was published on April 21, 2026; it was still the latest version on npm on October 16, 2026 [1].

Its README describes a "universal skills manager for AI coding agents" that can "install, manage, and sync skills across 46 AI agents including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, and more" [1]. Notable features [1]:

Which remote registry skillkit team sync uses, and whether Skillkit offers a hosted service, access control or audit logs, is not verified (as of October 16, 2026): the README does not say, and we could not read the project documentation on GitHub for this review.

What SkillReg is

SkillReg is a hosted private registry for your organization's SKILL.md skills:

When to use which

Use Skillkit if you are an individual developer who switches between many agents, especially less common ones, and wants one local tool to install, translate and sync skills.

Use SkillReg if your organization needs a shared source of truth for its own skills: who published which version, which scan results came with it, and who is allowed to install it.

Using both

Skillkit works on each developer's machine; SkillReg holds the organization's catalog. A team can publish internal skills to SkillReg, install them with skillreg pull, and still use Skillkit locally for agents that SkillReg does not target yet. Check what Skillkit writes into each agent folder before combining the two tools on the same project.
